Full Job Description

What’s Bench? Check us out in Medium, Betakit, Financial Post, our Instagram, and our Life at Bench Blog.

Businesses need to understand their financial performance, but for many smaller ones, this means a trade-off between managing their books and running their businesses.

Our mission is to make a profound difference in the quality of life of one million people. From creatives to chiropractors, Bench helps thousands of small business owners and entrepreneurs master their financial lives. Because understanding your finances should be three things: simple, effortless, and affordable.

We’re growing fast, and we’re looking for exceptional people to join us on this incredible journey. Check out our culture guide to learn more about what it’s like to work at Bench and read more about our business here!

What does the Finance department look like?

Bench’s Financial Reporting team builds and maintains the systems and processes that enables Bench to operate efficiently day-to-day, as well as provide key financial data that helps drive Bench’s success and growth. Being a member of this team means you’ll play an integral role in increasing the efficiency and efficacy of our day to day operations, month end close, and financial reporting. We’ve done some of the heavy lifting already but, there is still a lot to build and scale. You’ll be relied on to identify areas where we can improve as we continue to grow.

Reporting to our Manager, Financial Reporting, you will have the opportunity to develop and apply your accounting, problem solving, and process development skills into everything that we do. You’ll be a key contributor from day one, and you’ll learn all the in’s and outs of how a finance team at a tech company operates.

What you’ll be getting up to:

  • Ownership of Accounts Payable and the processes involved
  • Ownership of the procure to pay cycle
  • Assist with day to day treasury functions through Bank and Credit Card reconciliations.
  • Maintain fixed asset (and depreciation), expense and other key schedules on a monthly basis
  • Assist with Bench’s Monthly Financial Statement preparation through booking journal entries and analyzing variances
  • Prepare monthly account reconciliations
  • Assist with routine compliance reporting: GST/HST Remittances
  • Assist with Bench’s Financial Audit

To be successful in this role, you must:

  • You’re energized by building and improving processes: You are keen to make structural, scalable improvements to our finance operating system as well as make practical incremental changes to
enable quick wins. You opt for action instead of getting blocked by bureaucratic processes or analysis paralysis.
  • Critical and systematic thinking: You are unfazed by ambiguous problems and obstacles. You are creative and can break problems into smaller and easier to understand pieces for others.
  • Startup hustle: You are also a team-player ready to pitch-in wherever you are needed most. If you find something that needs doing, you are scrappy and do the thing. You don’t wait for others to do it for you. You take action, and refuse to ever say “that’s not my job.”
  • To be motivated by our mission: You are driven to help entrepreneurs conquer their finances, by building the biggest & best financial platform for small businesses
  • At least 6 months of Cash Reconciliation and Accounts Payable experience.
  • Completed a degree in Accounting or equivalent and planning or in the process of pursuing your CPA designation.
  • Working knowledge of Tipalti and NetSuite is beneficial.

What you’ll get:

  • At Bench we share information freely and openly whenever possible. The salary range for this role is $41,360 – $51,700 per year, depending on experience,
  • In addition, we offer an extended benefits package that includes paid vacation, paid flex days, stock options, and full health, dental, and vision.
  • You’ll get unlimited access to Bravely, our confidential, on-demand, 1:1 professional coaching service, and access to Inkblot Therapy, our virtual counselling service to support mental wellbeing.
  • Bench has a number of Affinity Groups – groups of people who have shared identities and experiences! The purpose of these groups is to support underrepresented Benchmates and amplify their voices.
  • If you live in BC’s Lower Mainland, you have the opportunity to work at home and in our downtown office location, depending on your preference! For some roles, we do require folks to be in the office regularly. We’ll be sure to outline expectations during the interview process.
  • Whether you get to use the office or if you work remotely, you’ll have access to our Home Office Setup Fund to ensure that you have everything you need to work comfortably from home, from day one.
  • We currently focus our hiring efforts in the following provinces: British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.
  • You will also have the opportunity to work internationally for up to 90 days per calendar year.

Everyone has their own unique talents. Even if you don’t meet 100% of the qualifications outlined above, tell us why you’d be a great fit for this role in your application.

We believe that unchecked biases disproportionately impact the most marginalized people in society—including but not limited to BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+ people, immigrants, and people with disabilities. We strongly encourage applications from people with these identities or other marginalized communities because we believe that without you, we are all less. At Bench, we don’t stand for tokenism. We stand for representation.
